WHETHER YOU’RE JUST SETTLING IN TO YOUR NEW HOME OR JUST FRESHENING UP YOUR SPACE, IT’S TIME TO FALL IN LOVE WITH FALL AND MAKE YOUR HOME AS COZY AND SEASONAL AS POSSIBLE.

Though everyone hates to see the days get shorter and air become cooler, marking the end of summer means storing patio furniture and putting away the hose, closing the pool, and pulling out the rakes. It’s a quarterly re-fresh on your home and a chance to get organized, and bring in the warm, spicy autumn scents and rustic colours.

For starters, it’s time to get organized —pack away your summer clothes and bring out your warm scarves, fall jackets and jeans again. Do the same with your home’s wardrobe — store away the light summer throws and replace them with that deep red or orange blanket for the sofa, or find a fall-inspired pillows for the season, that will add interest and style inside that’s reflective of the natural beauty outside.

It’s also important to get ahead of the game and have your furnace checked early. Get someone in just a wee bit before the winter rush and change your furnace filters too. Use this time to also clean out your gutters, clean the windows, and a thorough “fall cleanup” to transition into fall. It’s not only about prettying up, it’s about being practical.

Be sure to use the change of seasons to de-clutter. Donate or repurpose pieces of furniture or clothing you didn’t use or even look at all summer. Getting rid of useless things will help you find and use space more effectively, and polish up your home.

Upstairs, wash and store away your summer duvet — and all the light, colourful shades. Yes, summer really is over. Swap your cooler comforter for your heavy winter duvet, and since fall is all about layers, have a nice throw and pillows on top for style, and added comfort.

Pieces of locally-designed arts and crafts are a good way to connect with the season and your community, and where better to showcase local finds than in your home? You’ll find that unique paintings, bowls or centrepieces will really sharpen the look and feel of your home.

Speaking of warmth, it’s almost time to turn on that fireplace again. Have an inspector come in and ensure there are no leaks or safety hazards. If it’s a wooden stove in your home, have some wood ready to burn and be sure to do a chimney sweep to make sure everything is safe and sound. It will look and feel warmer by the minute.

Most importantly, when thinking about the fall, the warm stews and hearty baked goods come to mind — pumpkin, anyone? Maybe you’re not keen on baking apple crumble every day, or making your own pumpkin-spiced latte, but there are a variety of candles and holders that scream autumn, that will make your house smell like sweet baked goods and feel like fall. Candles create a relaxing ambiance and will help you relax after a long day at work.
