Downtown Fun on Valentine's Day

It’s that time of year again - Valentine’s Day. A day that is typically meant to be dedicated to a romantic partner, usually by way of flowers, candies, and cards; it is also a great time to spend with friends enjoying a fun night out! The downtown core of Guelph may be where you want to spend this special evening as it has every ingredient needed for a memorable time. There are plenty of things to do in our great city, but below is a list of some of our favourite ideas.

Restaurants:

The single most common thing to do with your loved one on Valentine’s Day is go out for dinner. Whether you are in the mood for gourmet Italian, savoury Indian, or some all-around great dining, there are innumerable restaurants downtown to celebrate your love. Considering that the big day is only a couple weeks away now, you should reserve a table soon to avoid any last minute scrambling. A lot of restaurants have a few set courses to choose from, so if that isn’t your style make sure you ask the host or hostess when you call. For anyone looking in the centre of the city, our downtown hosts a myriad of wonderful places to dine; here are several fine options you may want to consider for the 14th:

  • Buon Gusto
  • Atmosphere
  • Miijidaa
  • The Bollywood Bistro
  • La Cucina
  • Bin 23
  • 39 Carden Street

Drinks & Apps:

If you’re going out with friends, another couple, or just looking to be a little more casual, think about going for drinks and apps. It’s fun, keeps conversations rolling, and you get to try a bunch of different foods – who doesn’t like a lot of food? First dates, or those in a new relationship might be swayed to go for appetizers and a drink or two. After all, it usually ends up being a little lighter on the wallet!

Here are a few great places to go:

  • Ebar
  • NV Kitchen and Bar
  • The Albion Hotel
  • Bread Bar

A walk in the Park:

Riverside or Exhibition Park are great places to take a romantic stroll and enjoy the natural beauty within. Or wander through Royal City Park and enjoy the views of the river. If you’re going out for an afternoon walk then stop by the Boathouse Tea Room to warm up and get a hot tea (tea room closes at 4pm). Taking a walk is always a great post-dinner activity to help burn off a few of the extra calories from that Valentine’s Day desert special!

Catch a flick:

The Bookshelf on Quebec St. is a laid back cinema that offers a variety of great movies to watch; kick back with some popcorn, good company, a beverage, and enjoy your evening in the heart of downtown. Toni Erdmann is playing on the 14th at 7:30pm; it’s about a practical joking father who tries to reconnect with his hard working daughter by creating an outrageous alter ego and posing as her CEO's life coach. The bookshelf makes for a great dinner and a movie night – enjoy a film, then afterward venture out to Miijidaa for some cocktails and a bite to eat.

There is so much to do in our stunning downtown core there is little concern for not finding and enjoying a lovely evening with friends, family, or a loved one. With our growing community, downtown is sure to be very busy on Valentine’s Day, so plan ahead – and see you there!
